Introduction and Planning Guide

Planning for Virtual Private Networks

The IBM 2212 provides cryptographically strong multiprotocol virtual private networks (VPNs) to secure confidential information flows over untrusted networks. IP Security (IPSec) provides IP network layer security, while Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), and Layer 2 Forwarding (L2F) provide multiprotocol tunneling over IP.

For VPNs with quality of service requirements, the IBM 2212 integrated policy management simplifies configuration of VPNs, Differentiated Services (DS), and ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP).

VPN protocols are supported over all IP enabled interfaces on all ports and adapters. VPN capacity planning information is available at:

The support that the IBM 2212 provides for VPNs and for virtual private dial-up networks (VPDNs) are strong components of IBM's overall strategy for ensuring the security of your organization's data. However, they are only components of a larger solution. IBM's security solutions encompass multi-platform VPN-enabled clients and servers, routers, controllers, ISP services, and consulting services.
